The Exercise Science program requires students to complete a structured curriculum consisting of lower division core courses, upper division core courses, and a specialized concentration in Clinical Exercise and Rehabilitation. The program begins with 17 units of required lower division core courses that provide a strong scientific foundation for understanding the human body. Students study basic biological concepts and introductory human anatomy to gain knowledge of body structure and biological processes. In addition, students complete two general chemistry courses, which introduce chemical principles essential for understanding physiological and metabolic functions. These foundational science courses prepare students for the more advanced topics covered in upper division coursework.At the upper division level, students complete 43 units of core courses focused on exercise science, human movement, and physiological responses to physical activity. These courses include systemic physiology, kinesiology, biomechanics, and exercise physiology, which together explain how the body produces movement and adapts to exercise. Students also study the fundamentals of exercise programming and energy production in sports performance, allowing them to understand how exercise programs are designed to improve fitness and athletic ability. Additional coursework covers cardiovascular testing and exercise prescription, the analysis of weight training and muscular fitness, care of athletic injuries, and motor learning and control. These subjects provide both theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to exercise performance, injury prevention, and physical rehabilitation.In addition to the core curriculum, students complete a Clinical Exercise and Rehabilitation Specialist concentration that requires at least 13 units of specialized elective courses selected in consultation with an exercise science advisor. These electives allow students to deepen their knowledge in areas related to clinical health and rehabilitation, such as microbiology, genetics, advanced anatomy, neurophysiology, cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, nutrition, biochemistry, pharmacology, and statistics. Some courses focus specifically on clinical skills, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation, cardiac rehabilitation, and exercise electrocardiography.Overall, the program requires a total of 60 units and is designed to prepare students for careers in clinical exercise settings, rehabilitation, and health-related fitness professions. The combination of scientific knowledge, practical training, and specialized coursework also prepares graduates for advanced study in fields such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other health-related graduate programs.
