The BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science programme is designed to develop a strong understanding of human biology, disease processes, and clinical laboratory science through progressive study and practical experience. In the first year, students learn the core foundations of biomedical science by studying biomolecules such as sugars, lipids, DNA, RNA, amino acids and proteins, along with their structure and function through practical laboratory techniques. They also examine cell structure, communication, and organisation, as well as the principles of microbiology and genetics. In addition, students explore metabolism and the physiology of major body systems including the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, and urinary systems. In the second year, the course becomes more focused on clinical and disease-related topics. Students study clinical sciences to understand how biological samples such as blood and tissue are analysed in NHS laboratories, and they investigate the mechanisms of disease, immune responses, and pathogen activity. Other modules explore cell signalling, hormonal regulation, and the genetic basis of human diseases using modern scientific techniques. During the third year, students complete a biosciences placement where they gain valuable professional experience in a real laboratory or research environment. In the final year, students study advanced topics such as immunology, microbiology, and infectious diseases while completing a research project and developing professional skills. They also choose an optional module in areas such as cancer biology, applied microbiology, advanced molecular biology, or therapeutic development.
