The Master of Applied Professional Studies – Adult Teaching at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology provides a comprehensive exploration of key concepts and practices in adult education. The programme is structured to enhance professional capability through a series of applied, work-based courses that support the development of critical, reflective, and evidence-based practice. Topics include Critical Reflective Practice, which encourages students to deeply analyse their teaching methods and outcomes, and Adult Learning Theory, which explores the psychological and pedagogical foundations of how adults learn. Students also study Assessing for Learning, gaining insights into designing and implementing effective assessment strategies tailored for adult learners.Designing Learning Programmes for Adult Learners focuses on curriculum development and instructional design, equipping students with the skills to plan and structure meaningful educational experiences. In Adult Teaching Practice, students apply theoretical knowledge in real-life teaching scenarios, developing their professional teaching identity and confidence. Nga Tikanga Rangahau: Research Protocols introduces students to Māori-informed and ethical research approaches, essential for respectful and relevant educational inquiry in New Zealand’s bicultural context.In the final phase of the programme, students choose between a Research Project or Dissertation, allowing them to conduct an in-depth investigation into a specific area of adult education relevant to their professional practice. This capstone component helps consolidate research skills and contributes valuable insights to their field.
