The nursing program offers a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for a successful career in nursing, focusing on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. In the first year, students explore foundational topics such as Te Tiriti o Waitangi for Professional Practice, which provides an understanding of the Treaty’s principles in nursing, and Tiaki Ritenga Tūturu, which covers the fundamentals of nursing care. Other important subjects include an introduction to professional nursing practice, human development and psychology, continuing nursing care, community wellness, and essential science for nursing. In the second year, the focus shifts to specialized areas like primary health care for maternal, baby, child, and adolescent populations, and mental health and addiction nursing practice. Students also study inpatient and ambulatory care nursing, pharmacology, and pathophysiology, which deepen their understanding of how drugs work and the biological basis of diseases. The third year advances students’ knowledge further, concentrating on primary health care for adults and older adults, nursing practice for complex needs, and advancing professional nursing practice. A critical part of the final year is the Transition to Practice course, which supports students as they prepare to enter the nursing workforce. Throughout the program, students gain practical experience and professional skills, ensuring they are well-equipped to provide high-quality care and meet the diverse needs of their patients.
