Course Curriculum

The Master’s programme in Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering (MSc MADE) is hosted by the AMS Institute in Amsterdam and focuses on sustainable urban development. It brings together multidisciplinary teams to address the complex challenges faced by metropolitan regions, such as maintaining connectivity, creating circular cities, and safeguarding urban vitality. The programme takes an entrepreneurial approach, situating learning within the real-world context of Amsterdam, allowing students to explore innovative and practical solutions to pressing urban issues.In the first academic year, students follow foundational courses including Metropolitan Challenges, Data, and Entrepreneurship. These courses provide essential knowledge and skills, preparing students to analyse urban systems, understand sustainability challenges, and develop actionable strategies. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, equipping students to consider environmental, social, and economic dimensions when addressing metropolitan issues.The second year focuses on the Living Lab, a central feature of the MSc MADE programme. In this hands-on learning environment, students work on real-life cases in the city of Amsterdam, applying the insights and methods gained in the first year. The Living Lab fosters practical problem-solving, innovation, and experimentation, allowing students to develop and test solutions in an urban context. By engaging directly with stakeholders and urban systems, students gain experience in implementing sustainable development strategies that have tangible social and environmental impact.Through this combination of theoretical learning, practical experience, and interdisciplinary collaboration, MSc MADE prepares graduates to become professionals capable of shaping resilient, sustainable, and connected metropolitan regions.
