The Master of Science in Energy Systems Engineering at University of Galway is a 12-month, 90 ECTS programme designed for engineers from a variety of disciplines who wish to specialise in the energy sector. Core modules include Advanced Energy Systems Engineering, Sustainable Energy, SmartGrid, Energy in Buildings, and the Energy Systems Engineering MSc Project, which gives students the opportunity to apply their learning to real-world challenges. Optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to their interests and include Systems Modelling and Simulation, Power Systems, Digital Control Systems for Automation and Robotics, Sustainable Waste Management, Advanced Wind Energy Engineering and Design, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Composite Materials, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Applications, Design of Sustainable Environmental Systems, Global Change, Planning and Law, Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Fundamentals of Python Programming, Green Hydrogen Technology, Design and Analysis, Turbomachines and Advanced Fluid Dynamics, Renewable Energy Economics and Policy, and Internet of Things Systems Design. The programme is delivered in Ireland’s state-of-the-art Alice Perry Engineering Building, giving students access to advanced laboratories, simulation tools, and collaborative workspaces. By combining rigorous academic study with applied research and project work, the MSc equips graduates with the technical knowledge, analytical skills, and practical experience required to address complex energy challenges. Graduates are prepared to contribute to sustainable energy solutions, work in renewable energy and low-carbon technologies, and take on roles in engineering design, consultancy, research and development, and project management.
