Course Curriculum

The Mining Engineering program at UBC is structured over four years to develop a comprehensive understanding of the technical, environmental, and managerial aspects of mineral extraction and processing. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in general engineering, chemistry, physics, calculus, and mechanics, along with an introduction to engineering principles, preparing them for more specialized study. The second year expands this knowledge with courses in technical communication, soil mechanics, earth sciences for engineers, mineralogy, and an introduction to mining, providing essential background in geology and mining fundamentals. In the third year, students focus on core mining engineering subjects, including underground mining and design, rock fragmentation, physical mineral processes, and flotation, alongside engineering materials and applied electronics, integrating theory with practical problem-solving and laboratory experience. The fourth year emphasizes professional practice, mine management, mine waste management, and the environmental and social impacts of mining operations, preparing students to plan, manage, and optimize mining projects responsibly and sustainably. Throughout the program, students gain expertise in extraction methods, mineral processing, environmental stewardship, and project management, ensuring they are equipped to address technical challenges while minimizing environmental impacts and enhancing social outcomes.
