Course Curriculum

The Geological Engineering program at UBC Okanagan provides a comprehensive curriculum that blends foundational engineering principles with specialized geoscience knowledge to prepare students for professional practice. In the first year, students build a strong base in engineering, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and introductory geoscience through courses such as Introduction to Engineering, Chemistry for Engineering, Differential Calculus, and Introductory Physics for Engineers. The second year expands technical skills and introduces students to soil mechanics, computational methods in geological engineering, solid mechanics, and petrology, laying the groundwork for understanding earth materials and their behavior in engineering contexts. In the third year, students advance into specialized topics including rock mechanics, principles of geomorphology, hydrology, soil mechanics, groundwater hydrology, and geophysics, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical applications. The fourth-year curriculum focuses on professional practice, advanced geotechnical and foundation engineering, environmental and exploration geophysics, and culminates in the Geological Engineering Practice and Engineering Design Project courses, where students apply their learning to real-world challenges. Throughout the program, students develop problem-solving, analytical, and technical skills necessary for assessing and managing natural and built environments. This structured progression ensures graduates are equipped for careers in construction, resource development, environmental management, and hazard mitigation, and provides a strong foundation for professional licensure or further study.
