Course Curriculum

The Veterinary Technology program at St. Lawrence College is a comprehensive three-year course designed to equip students with a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for veterinary and biomedical fields. The curriculum begins with foundational courses in animal behavior, anatomy, physiology, clinical procedures, medical terminology, ethics, and biological mathematics, emphasizing both small and large animal care. Early semesters introduce students to parasitology, veterinary hospital management, general laboratory techniques, and computer applications, fostering a broad understanding of veterinary practice and workplace readiness. Hands-on experience is integrated through placements at locations like the Kingston Humane Society, where students practice animal restraint, health checks, and basic clinical procedures. As the program progresses, students delve deeper into specialized areas such as animal nutrition, laboratory animal welfare and techniques, clinical laboratory procedures, veterinary anesthesia, pharmacology, microbiology, and surgical nursing. Advanced courses focus on surgical techniques, veterinary imaging, emergency and critical care, livestock management, and statistics, ensuring students develop proficiency in both routine and complex clinical tasks. The final year includes specialized courses in veterinary dentistry, laboratory animal research techniques, immunology, wildlife and exotics, histology, general pathology, and preparation for work placements. A significant component of the program involves work experience through multiple placements in veterinary practices and research facilities, providing real-world exposure and professional development.
