Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

Sheridan’s Industrial Design program features an eight-semester curriculum that develops technical expertise, creative problem-solving and professional readiness. The first two semesters focus on foundational skills, including design process, 3D fundamentals, digital drawing, sketching, composition, materials and processes, as well as alternate media exposure in ceramics, furniture, glass and textiles. Students also study art and design history and visual communication, building a broad contextual understanding. In semesters three and four, the curriculum introduces human factors, context and culture, systems and multiples, and industrial design history, alongside studio electives, field studies, photography and breadth electives that expand creative and critical perspectives. Upper-year courses emphasize professional and ethical practices, product presentation, design mobilization, user experience and industry projects, preparing students for real-world design challenges. Career readiness is further strengthened through a work-term preparation course and a 14-week, 420-hour internship that provides hands-on industry experience. The final semesters focus on independent capstone project development and execution, complemented by marketing, business models and additional breadth electives. Throughout the program, collaboration with other Craft and Design studios fosters interdisciplinary problem-solving and innovation. Graduates emerge with a comprehensive skill set, combining technical mastery, creative thinking and professional confidence, ready to contribute effectively in contemporary industrial design and related fields.
