The Practical Nursing program at Seneca spans four semesters and provides students with a thorough blend of theoretical knowledge, hands-on skills, and clinical experience to prepare for a career as a Registered Practical Nurse (RPN). In Semester 1, students focus on foundational courses including anatomy and physiology, mathematics for medication administration, health and healing practices, role development, and practical skills through in-person labs, alongside effective communication training. Semester 2 builds on this foundation with advanced anatomy and physiology, health assessment, pharmacology, clinical preparation, and applied nursing skills, supported by psychology studies and hybrid learning options. In Semester 3, students engage in intensive clinical placements, pharmacology, pathophysiology, and healing practices, while continuing to develop professional roles and responsibilities as practical nurses, integrating theory with real-world practice. Semester 4 emphasizes advanced clinical experience, complex pathophysiology, and refinement of nursing roles and leadership, ensuring students are competent in patient care across diverse healthcare settings. Throughout the program, there is a strong focus on professional communication, critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and evidence-informed practice. Graduates are equipped to write the Canadian Practical Nurse Registration Examination (CPNRE) and are eligible to register with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), ready to provide safe, compassionate, and competent care in hospitals, community health facilities, and other clinical environments.
