Course Curriculum

The Personal Support Worker program spans one year and provides students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to deliver high-quality care to clients in both community and institutional settings. In the first semester, students develop foundational competencies, including effective communication through courses such as Communicating Across Contexts, and gain an understanding of client- and family-centered care, human anatomy, illness management, and the essential skills required for safe and competent personal support. Courses such as Fundamental Skills for the Personal Support Worker and Safe Client Care emphasize practical, hands-on training that prepares students to meet the diverse needs of clients while promoting safety, dignity, and independence. In the second semester, the focus shifts to specialized areas including palliative care, mental health, and cognitive impairments, allowing students to deepen their understanding of complex client needs. Integral to the program are the in-person practicum placements, both in facility settings and through preceptorships, which provide real-world experience, foster professional growth, and allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in practical environments. By the end of the program, graduates are equipped with the practical skills, empathy, and professionalism necessary to provide compassionate care, collaborate effectively within inter-professional teams, and contribute meaningfully to the health and well-being of clients across diverse care settings.
