Course Curriculum

The Health Care Assistant (HCA) Program follows a government-developed curriculum recognized by the BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry, ensuring quality and relevance in healthcare training. The program includes a range of exclusive courses designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed for competent practice in diverse healthcare settings. The foundational course, Concepts for Practice, introduces students to the theoretical framework, emphasizing person-centered care, human development, cultural diversity, and problem-solving approaches essential for effective healthcare assistance. Additional courses such as Introduction to Practice and Interpersonal Communications develop practical skills and enhance students’ ability to interact compassionately with patients and healthcare teams. Lifestyle & Choices and Common Health Challenges explore factors influencing health and wellness, while Cognitive and/or Mental Health Challenges focus on supporting individuals with mental health needs. Personal Care and Assistance teaches essential clinical skills for daily patient care. The program also includes valuable hands-on learning through Practice Experience in Multi-Level and/or Complex Care, as well as Home Support, Assisted Living, and Group Home settings. This comprehensive curriculum ensures that graduates are well-prepared to provide compassionate, competent care and thrive in various healthcare environments.
