The Aircraft Maintenance Engineer – Mechanical (AME-M) program at Okanagan College is a comprehensive 74-week, 2035-hour full-time training program designed to prepare students for careers in aviation maintenance. The program spans two years and combines theoretical instruction with extensive hands-on experience in both Vernon and Kelowna Aerospace Campuses. In the first semester, students build foundational knowledge through courses such as Orientation, Practical Aviation Mathematics, Aerodynamics and Aircraft Construction, Basic Electrical Theory, Canadian Aviation Regulations Level 1, Aircraft Systems Level 1, and practical labs in Machine Shop, Metal Aircraft Construction, and Aircraft Composites. The second semester focuses on aircraft electricity, powerplants with reciprocating engines, engine systems theory, propeller theory, electrical components, and engine maintenance, providing essential mechanical skills. Year two advances students’ expertise with turbine engine theory and maintenance, advanced aerodynamics, aircraft systems, instrumentation, and rotary wing airframe systems, alongside basic airframe maintenance. The final semester emphasizes regulatory compliance, helicopter and fixed-wing maintenance, engine removal and installation, landing gear systems, hangar support, aircraft system maintenance, and troubleshooting and repair. Throughout the program, students gain the technical proficiency, regulatory knowledge, and practical experience required to meet Transport Canada standards, positioning them for careers with airlines, helicopter operators, and maintenance organizations nationwide, fully prepared for certification as Aircraft Maintenance Engineers specializing in mechanical systems.
