The Master of Arts (Advanced Seminar and Shorter Thesis) is a flexible postgraduate program designed for students who wish to deepen their knowledge and research skills in the humanities and social sciences. The program combines coursework with an independent research thesis of 20,000 to 22,000 words, allowing students to explore a topic of interest in depth while demonstrating awareness of current research and theoretical developments in their chosen field. Students are supported throughout their studies by expert supervisors and have access to specialist workshops, seminars, and leadership programs offered by the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences.This program is intended for students seeking to develop advanced understanding and expertise in one or more areas of humanities or social sciences. It cultivates high-level research, analytical, and writing skills, preparing graduates to contribute original knowledge to their field. The Master of Arts (Advanced Seminar and Shorter Thesis) can also serve as a pathway to a Doctor of Philosophy – Arts degree for those wishing to continue their research at the highest academic level.The degree is usually completed over 18 months of full-time study or three years part-time. Applications are only accepted for Semester 1 commencement, and students are expected to begin in the first week of the semester. By combining coursework and research, students gain both the theoretical grounding and practical research experience required to advance in academic, professional, or policy-focused careers. The program is particularly suitable for individuals who wish to engage with complex questions in the humanities and social sciences, develop specialised skills in research and writing, and prepare for further study or leadership roles in their chosen discipline.
