Course Curriculum

The Graduate Certificate of Journalism is structured to provide a comprehensive foundation in journalistic theory, practice, and ethics through a 24-credit-point program. The course is divided into core studies and specified electives, ensuring students acquire both essential professional skills and the flexibility to tailor learning to their interests. The 18-credit-point core studies focus on developing critical abilities in research, reporting, and understanding global media landscapes. Students undertake units such as Doing Media and Communications Research, which equips them with rigorous research methodologies applicable across media contexts; Journalism Practice, which provides hands-on training in reporting, writing, and content creation; and Principles of Global Media and Communications, which explores the theoretical and practical frameworks underpinning contemporary journalism worldwide. Complementing these core studies, students select 6 credit points from specified elective units, allowing them to deepen expertise in specialized areas. Elective options include Video Journalism for visual storytelling, Digital Journalism for online media proficiency, Photography for multimedia reporting, Media, Law and Ethics for understanding regulatory and ethical considerations, and Investigative and Data Journalism for skills in uncovering and analysing complex information. This structure ensures graduates leave with a balanced combination of practical skills, analytical competence, and ethical awareness, making them adaptable to a range of roles within journalism, communications, and media industries. By integrating theoretical understanding with hands-on practice, the program prepares students to produce high-quality, responsible journalism while developing transferable skills that are valuable across multiple professional contexts. Completion of the Graduate Certificate also serves as a pathway for further study in the Master of Journalism, providing a robust platform for career advancement or academic progression.
