The Bachelor of Nutrition Science is designed to provide an interdisciplinary understanding of how nutrition supports health maintenance and contributes to the prevention of disease, with the course organised into themes that progressively build scientific knowledge and professional capability. Throughout the degree, students develop essential personal and professional skills required in nutrition practice, including effective communication, critical thinking, reflective practice and an understanding of research methodologies and their application to evidence-based nutrition. A central part of the program focuses on the determinants and influences of public health and nutrition, introducing students to population-level nutrition issues, social determinants of health, epidemiology and the use of statistical methods to assess disease risk, while also examining broader public health contexts such as food sustainability, advocacy and program evaluation. Another major theme explores nutrition fundamentals of health and disease, covering the physiological and chemical foundations of human nutrition across growth and development, the impact of macro and micronutrients on metabolic and cellular processes, and the interconnected roles of diet, physical activity and behaviour in the prevention and management of chronic diseases. The theme Food: From science to systems provides foundational scientific knowledge about food composition, cellular structures, microbiology, food regulations and standards, alongside practical skill development in analysing dietary patterns, assessing nutritional status and evaluating the food supply for application in real-world nutrition contexts. Students also have the opportunity to broaden or specialise their learning through elective studies, choosing either additional nutrition-focused units or subjects from other disciplines within the University. The course concludes with a research project, extended study or placement that integrates theoretical knowledge with practical or investigative experience. To complete the program, students must achieve 144 credit points, including 126 credit points of core studies and 18 credit points of specified electives, guided by a clearly structured course progression map.
