Course Curriculum

The Graduate Diploma of Law Research Studies offers an 80 credit point program designed for law graduates who wish to advance their skills in research methodology and undertake supervised research in their chosen area of law. This program provides a pathway for students who do not meet the direct entry requirements for higher research degrees such as the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Philosophy (MPhil). It equips students with essential knowledge and skills to conduct high-level legal research, preparing them for progression into advanced research degrees. Upon successful completion, students can apply for admission to either PhD or MPhil candidature, with the final grade determining eligibility. Throughout the program, a Program Director oversees the supervision and progress of each student to ensure they receive the necessary academic support. Students also have the option to exit the program early, after completing the required courses, with a Graduate Certificate in Law Research Studies. For Trimester 1, 2026, students are required to complete a 10 credit point Legal Research Methods course, which forms a fundamental part of their training in legal research techniques, critical analysis, and academic writing. This course prepares students for the dissertation component and further research work. Alongside this core course, students engage in dissertation courses and may select from a range of law electives to broaden their expertise. The program is structured to develop strong research capabilities, allowing students to explore complex legal issues independently.
