The Bachelor of Computer Science degree structure for students commencing in Trimester 2, 2025, is designed to provide a strong foundation in both theoretical principles and practical skills essential for careers in computing and technology. To complete the degree, students must accumulate 100 credit points in their first year, consisting of 80 credit points from core courses and 20 credit points from core course options.Students who are required to meet English language requirements must complete the Language and Communication for Sciences course (5903LHS) during their first trimester. This course is taken in place of one flexible module and is only available to students whose first language is not English. The 80 credit points of core courses cover a broad spectrum of fundamental topics in computer science. In Trimester 1, students complete Professional ICT Practice (1004ICT), Computer Systems and Cyber Security (1007ICT), and Programming Principles (1811ICT). These courses introduce professional standards, security awareness, and foundational programming skills. In Trimester 2, students build on this with Applied Computing (1011ICT), Discrete Structures (1808ICT), Mathematics for Computer Science (1013ICT), and Software Projects (2810ICT), gaining experience in computation, logic, mathematical reasoning, and team-based development. Computing Algorithms (2801ICT), offered in Trimester 1, is also a core requirement, introducing students to fundamental algorithmic thinking and problem-solving approaches. For the remaining 20 credit points, students select from the core course options, which typically include elective courses or further introductory subjects in advanced computing topics. These provide flexibility to explore specific interests or to begin shaping a major area of focus.Students who excel academically in their first year, achieving a minimum GPA of 6.0, may be eligible to progress to the Bachelor of Advanced Computer Science (Honours) program. This provides a pathway for high-achieving students to undertake more rigorous academic challenges and research opportunities in their later years.
