Course Curriculum

Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Bachelor of Arts (Sociology major) at Griffith University offers students a structured pathway to explore society and culture through a sociological lens. Students are required to complete a core module, major module, and flexible module, totaling the necessary credit points for the degree. For those needing to meet English proficiency requirements, the "Language and Communication for Arts and Social Sciences" course must be completed in the first trimester in place of a flexible elective. The Sociology major comprises 60 credit points from six key courses. In Trimester 1, students will take “Sociology of Identity,” which examines how social identity is formed and expressed; “Youth in Society,” focusing on young people’s roles and challenges in contemporary society; “Popular Music, Culture and Identity,” which explores how music influences and reflects cultural identity; and “Qualitative Interviewing for Social Research,” where students learn methods for collecting and analyzing interview data. In Trimester 2, students study “The Sporting Experience,” a sociological look at the role of sport in society, and “Death, Grief and Culture,” which investigates how different cultures understand and cope with death and mourning. This diverse suite of subjects equips students with strong critical thinking, research, and communication skills while deepening their understanding of social behavior, identity, and cultural practices.
