The Master of Social Work (Graduate Entry) at Flinders University provides students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience required for ethical, inclusive, and effective professional social work practice. The program emphasises research, analysis, and the ability to articulate frameworks that integrate theory, policy, and practice. Students learn to recognise the cultural context of social work approaches and apply them appropriately to different populations and situations, while understanding the connections between interpersonal practice, social policy, and research. Key topics include working with diverse populations, addressing complexities in child and family services, mental health across the lifespan, and trauma and resilience.A central feature of the program is its extensive practical component. Students undertake two field placements, each totaling 500 hours, typically scheduled over four days per week. These placements provide exposure to a wide range of practice settings, methodologies, and client groups, allowing students to develop professional values, demonstrate judgement, and apply their knowledge in real-world contexts. Through these experiences, students refine their interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills while gaining a deep understanding of professional social work responsibilities.To participate in field placements, students must complete a National Criminal History Check and Department for Communities and Social Inclusion (DCSI) screening, ensuring eligibility to work with vulnerable populations. Some placements may also require vaccinations and an Australian Driver’s Licence.
