Course Curriculum

The Master of Sustainable Development at Flinders University provides a comprehensive program that equips students with the knowledge and skills to address pressing global challenges such as climate change, poverty, population growth, and gender inequality. In the first year, students explore foundational topics including Development Problems and Solutions, Sustainable Development in a Global World, Asian Regional Development, Smart, Liveable and Resilient Cities, and Population Dynamics. These subjects provide a broad understanding of the environmental, economic, social, and political dimensions of development, preparing students to analyse complex problems and design effective solutions. In the second year, the program deepens this knowledge through advanced topics such as Gender Analysis, Critical Perspectives on Global Health and Development, Social Statistics, and the opportunity to undertake either a Research Thesis or a Research Project. This combination of coursework and research ensures students develop strong analytical, critical thinking, and practical research skills, allowing them to synthesise interdisciplinary information and contribute meaningfully to debates on human-environment relationships. Graduates are prepared for careers in public, private, and non-governmental organisations focused on sustainable development, policy, and research. The program’s emphasis on applied learning, research, and critical analysis ensures students are capable of developing strategies that promote sustainability, equity, and resilience in local and global contexts.
