The Bachelor of Urban and Regional Planning at Flinders University is structured to guide students from foundational knowledge to advanced practical skills, preparing them for professional practice in shaping communities and managing land use. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in planning principles, human geography, and environmental and societal contexts. Core topics include planning, design principles, Indigenous identities, environment and society, planning law, geospatial information systems, human geography, and public policy. This initial year equips students with the analytical, legal, and spatial knowledge needed to understand and address complex planning challenges.In the second year, the program introduces more applied and data-driven skills. Students engage with topics such as social transformation, social sciences data, location intelligence, urban planning project, sustainable regional development, and population dynamics. Work placements and three option topics provide hands-on experience and the flexibility to tailor studies to individual interests. This year emphasizes real-world applications, preparing students to assess urban and regional environments critically and develop practical solutions.The third year focuses on advanced planning, strategic thinking, and professional practice. Core topics include smart, liveable and resilient cities, environmental impact, Indigenous environmental management, work placement 2, strategic planning, regional planning project, and climate change, along with four option topics. Students integrate knowledge from previous years to design sustainable and inclusive urban and regional solutions, manage projects, and collaborate with stakeholders to enhance community value.Through this structured progression, graduates develop technical expertise, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills essential for careers in urban and regional planning. They leave prepared to work with government agencies, consultancy firms, heritage and environmental organisations, or community development projects, contributing to the creation of vibrant, sustainable, and resilient communities.
