Discover how each program is uniquely designed to inspire learning

The Bachelor of Social Work at Flinders University is a four-year program designed to prepare students for a professional career dedicated to creating meaningful social change and supporting individuals, families, and communities facing complex challenges. In the first year, students build a foundation in social work and related disciplines through topics such as health and social care in Australia, Indigenous studies, democracy in Australia, psychology skills, interpersonal skills, and sociology. These courses introduce students to key concepts in social justice, community wellbeing, and human behaviour, providing the essential knowledge needed for further study. The second year expands on this foundation with courses in service law and practice, human social development, social policy practice, intersectionality, practicing social work, research and evaluation, social work theories, and groups and communities. These topics help students understand the legal, social, and ethical frameworks guiding social work, while developing practical skills in assessment, intervention, and working with diverse populations. In the third year, students focus on consolidating their knowledge and applying it in more specialised contexts, studying research and evaluation, well-being and protection, identity, self and agency, professional judgement, and mental health, alongside field education placements that provide hands-on professional experience. The fourth year further develops advanced professional capabilities, with core topics including advanced social work theories, sustainable social work, violence and abuse, and continued field education placements, allowing students to refine their practice, demonstrate professional judgement, and integrate theory with real-world application. Across all four years, the program emphasizes critical thinking, cultural competence, ethical decision-making, and the ability to advocate effectively for individuals and communities. By graduation, students are well-prepared to enter professional practice as skilled, reflective social workers who are capable of driving positive social outcomes, promoting justice and equity, and making a lasting difference in the lives of the people and communities they serve.
