Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Science (Plant Science) (Honours) at Flinders University provides a comprehensive curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and research experience to prepare graduates for careers in plant science, biotechnology, agriculture, horticulture, environmental science, and conservation. In the first year, students develop a strong foundation through core topics in Plant Science, an introduction to Chemistry, Biostatistics, and Biodiversity and Conservation. These courses equip students with essential scientific knowledge and analytical skills, while also introducing practical laboratory and fieldwork techniques.In the second year, students build on this foundation with topics in Biodiversity and Ecology, Biochemistry, and Innovation in STEM, alongside elective subjects. This stage expands understanding of plant systems, ecological interactions, and scientific methods, encouraging critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Electives allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests and career goals.The third year focuses on advanced study, with core topics covering Plant System Functions, the Impacts of Global Climate Change, Restoration Ecology, and Molecular Biology. Students also have the opportunity to undertake an optional research project, providing hands-on experience in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication. This year develops specialised skills and prepares students for independent research and professional practice.The Honours year offers in-depth training in research planning, project execution, and advanced analytical techniques. Students undertake a major research project under expert supervision, developing professional skills essential for postgraduate research or advanced industrial investigation.
