Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Science (Marine Biology) at Flinders University provides a structured curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge, practical experience, and research training to prepare students for careers in marine science, conservation, and resource management. In the first year, students build foundational skills through core topics including Evolution of Biological Diversity, Molecular Basis of Life, Introduction to Marine Biology, Marine Sciences, the Nature of Science, and Biostatistics. Additional studies in Chemical Structure and Bonding or General Chemistry, along with Chemistry for the Life Sciences, ensure a solid grounding in essential scientific principles. This year also introduces students to key laboratory and field techniques, preparing them for more specialised study.In the second year, students expand their expertise with core topics such as Experimental Design and Statistics for Biology, Genetics, Evolution and Biodiversity, Ecology, Animal Diversity, Marine Ecology, and Coasts and Oceans. A selection of electives allows students to tailor their studies to individual interests and emerging areas of marine science. This stage emphasizes analytical skills, fieldwork experience, and the integration of ecological and environmental knowledge.The third year focuses on advanced study and applied research. Core topics include Conservation Biology and Restoration Ecology, Marine and Freshwater Biology, Plant and Algal Diversity, Marine Mammals, Birds and Reptiles, and Fisheries Biology, Science and Management. Students also undertake a biology research project, developing skills in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication.In the honours year, high-performing students complete a major marine biology research thesis, gaining in-depth experience in scientific investigation, research methodologies, and professional practices relevant to research and development. The program provides graduates with extensive knowledge, practical skills, and transferable competencies, preparing them for careers in marine research, conservation, fisheries management, environmental consultancy, and further postgraduate study.
