The Bachelor of Science at Flinders University offers a flexible and comprehensive curriculum designed to provide a strong foundation in science while allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals. In the first year, students follow a common foundational program that builds essential knowledge and skills across key scientific disciplines. Core topics include the Molecular Basis of Life, Chemistry, and Mathematics, which provide the theoretical and analytical tools necessary for advanced study. Students also complete Communicating STEM, developing professional communication skills for scientific contexts, and Coding for Science, where they learn computational techniques to analyse and interpret data. In addition, students choose three option topics from a selection of ten, including Physics, Biostatistics, Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Biological Diversity, enabling early exploration of different fields and helping them identify potential areas of specialisation. In the second year, students begin to focus on their chosen Majors and Minors. Majors can include subjects such as Chemistry, Mathematics, Nuclear Engineering, or Sustainability, providing depth in a primary area of interest. Minors, such as Animal Behaviour, Aquaculture, Data Science, or Palaeontology, allow students to explore complementary disciplines, adding breadth to their degree and fostering interdisciplinary understanding. This stage of study combines theoretical learning with practical applications, including laboratory work, field experiences, and project-based exercises, preparing students for advanced scientific study and professional practice. The third year of the degree focuses on advanced study within selected Majors and Minors, allowing students to consolidate their knowledge and develop specialised expertise. This stage often includes more complex laboratory work, research projects, and analytical exercises, enabling students to apply their skills to real-world scientific problems. By the end of the program, graduates are equipped with a strong foundation in scientific principles, practical experience, and critical-thinking skills, ready to pursue careers in research, industry, government, or further study in science-related fields.
