The Bachelor of Midwifery (Preregistration) at Flinders University is carefully structured to build students’ knowledge, skills, and confidence across three years of study. In the first year, students are introduced to the foundations of midwifery and healthcare. Core topics focus on developing professional skills for midwives, gaining a solid grounding in human bioscience, and discovering midwifery practice. Students also explore ways to optimise health for women and babies, while learning strengths-based approaches to health by working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples. This is complemented by an introduction to understanding midwifery practice in real-world contexts. The second year deepens this foundation by expanding into applied knowledge and more complex aspects of care. Students study developing midwifery practice, applied pathophysiology and pharmacology for midwives, perinatal wellbeing, and evidence-based midwifery care. They also focus on managing more complex pregnancy and childbirth scenarios through advanced pathophysiology and pharmacology, while applying their midwifery practice in increasingly diverse settings. By the third year, the emphasis shifts to integrating learning and preparing for professional practice. Students explore global health for midwives, develop collaborative and interprofessional learning skills, and refine their ability to integrate theory and practice. Topics such as consolidating midwifery practice and undertaking a midwifery professional practice project allow students to demonstrate their readiness for the workforce. This structure ensures graduates emerge with a comprehensive education that balances theory, clinical practice, cultural competence, and global perspectives. Step by step, the program supports students in becoming confident, reflective, and skilled practitioners who are equipped to meet the complex needs of women, babies, and families in diverse care environments. By the end of their studies, students are well-prepared to begin rewarding careers as professional midwives and contribute meaningfully to maternal and newborn health.
