Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) at Flinders University provides students with a comprehensive foundation in biomedical science and laboratory practice. In the first year, students develop essential knowledge and skills through core topics including Skills for Medical Science, Physiology, Chemistry, Histology, and Biology, alongside two option topics to tailor their learning to individual interests. This foundational year equips students with the scientific understanding and practical laboratory techniques necessary for advanced study and professional practice.In the third year, students progress to more specialised and advanced topics, including Pathophysiology, Advanced Human Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, and Microbiology. These units deepen students’ understanding of human biology, molecular mechanisms of disease, and laboratory diagnostic methods, preparing them for complex laboratory work and research. This stage combines theoretical learning with practical application, allowing students to develop analytical and critical thinking skills essential for interpreting clinical and experimental data.The fourth year focuses on Work-Integrated Learning (WIL), providing professional experience through the core topic Professional Practice for Medical Science. During this year, students apply their accumulated knowledge and laboratory skills in real-world clinical or research environments, gaining hands-on experience, industry exposure, and professional networks.Overall, the Bachelor of Medical Science (Laboratory Medicine) equips graduates with the expertise, practical experience, and professional skills needed for careers in hospital laboratories, clinical diagnostics, biotechnology, and medical research.
