Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Information Technology at Flinders University is designed to equip students with the technical expertise, practical experience, and professional skills needed for a successful career in the diverse and rapidly evolving IT industry. Graduates are prepared to work across sectors including business, commerce, defence, medical research, climate change, and environmental management, applying technology to solve real-world problems.In the first year, students build a strong foundation in computing through core topics such as fundamentals of computing, networks and cybersecurity, computer programming, professional skills, database modelling, and software engineering. Students also have the opportunity to choose elective topics in mathematics, data science, biostatistics, or other areas across the university, allowing for tailored study to suit individual interests and career goals.The second year focuses on intermediate and applied topics, including web-based systems, application development, and computer networks and operating systems. Students also select option topics from computer science, engineering, and mathematics, as well as university-wide electives, further expanding their technical knowledge and interdisciplinary understanding.In the third year, students advance to enterprise-level IT systems, studying enterprise cloud systems, interactive computer systems, and project management for engineering and science. Practical experience is emphasised through an IT practicum with workplace preparation or an IT project, complemented by a selection of option topics across computer science, engineering, and mathematics. This hands-on experience ensures graduates are industry-ready and able to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.For those pursuing honours, the program offers a one-year pathway including a major thesis project and a selection of advanced topics from computer science, engineering, and mathematics. This pathway provides opportunities for in-depth research, professional development, and preparation for leadership roles or postgraduate study.Graduates leave the program with strong technical and analytical skills, professional experience, and versatility to work as IT specialists, software developers, systems analysts, cybersecurity professionals, or technology consultants.
