The Bachelor of Education (Secondary Health and Physical Education) at Flinders University is structured to provide a comprehensive combination of theoretical knowledge, subject-specific expertise, and extensive professional experience across four years. In the first year, students develop foundational skills in inclusive education, pedagogy and practice, communities of practice, literacy, and health. These courses establish essential teaching knowledge and introduce students to professional practices, preparing them for engagement in classroom environments.In the second year, students expand their understanding of child and adolescent development through Psychology for Children and Adolescents and undertake a professional experience placement. They also complete nine units from an approved major and nine units each from an approved minor and a second minor, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific interests while developing depth in subject areas relevant to secondary education.The third year focuses on refining teaching expertise and practical classroom skills. Core topics include Health and Physical Education, Indigenous Pedagogy, Inclusive Teaching, and Digital Literacy and Numeracy. Students participate in further professional experience placements and complete 4.5 units from an approved option topic, 4.5 units from an approved major, 4.5 units from an approved minor, and one additional option topic. This combination ensures students develop both specialised content knowledge and the practical teaching skills needed to effectively manage diverse classroom environments.In the fourth year, students consolidate their learning and prepare for professional practice. Core topics include The Professional Educator and an additional professional experience placement, alongside 13.5 units from an approved major and 4.5 units from a second approved minor. Students also have the option to complete an internship or select two option or elective topics, providing opportunities for further specialisation and career preparation. By combining rigorous academic study with extensive hands-on experience, graduates emerge as confident, classroom-ready educators, equipped to teach Health and Physical Education in secondary schools while supporting student wellbeing, engagement, and learning outcomes.
