Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Fashion Design at Flinders University is structured to progressively build students’ technical, creative, and professional skills over three years. In the first year, students focus on the fundamentals of garment design and construction, exploring areas such as colour theory, pattern development, and becoming familiar with fashion workshop equipment. A core topic in academic and professional communication helps students develop essential skills for effectively presenting ideas and collaborating in creative environments.In the second year, students further develop their garment design and construction abilities through workshop projects and retail-focused assignments. The curriculum introduces a range of digital skills for fashion design, alongside studies in the history of fashion and culture, providing context and inspiration for creative work. An environmental studies topic equips students with knowledge about the potential global impacts of the fashion industry, while additional business-focused courses help students understand commercial and operational aspects of fashion practice. This combination of practical, digital, and theoretical learning prepares students to engage thoughtfully and responsibly in the fashion industry.The third year emphasizes advanced professional practice, entrepreneurship, and the social impacts of fashion. Students have the opportunity to design, produce, and showcase either a bespoke range of garments or a product development range in the annual graduate fashion parade, an event that mirrors industry practice in large fashion businesses. This capstone experience allows students to apply their accumulated knowledge and skills in a professional setting, preparing them for careers in fashion design, garment production, patternmaking, and related creative roles. Across the three years, students gain a comprehensive understanding of both the creative and business sides of the fashion industry, building a portfolio and professional experience that position them for success in a competitive and evolving field.
