The Bachelor of Costume Design at Flinders University is structured to progressively build students’ creative, technical, and professional skills over three years. In the first year, students begin developing practical skills in costume making and design while also enhancing academic abilities through the core topic in academic and professional communication. This foundation allows students to communicate ideas effectively and engage with creative processes confidently. Additionally, students have the opportunity to select one elective option from a range of topics in creative arts, drama, and screen, enabling them to explore areas of personal interest and begin shaping their individual approach to costume design. In the second year, the focus shifts to further developing practical costume-making and design skills. Students undertake a range of topics covering drama, art, culture, the history of fashion and costume, and digital processes for garment design. The curriculum includes a patternmaking, design, and construction project, as well as a creative arts practicum or project, which provides hands-on experience and insight into professional practices within the costume and performance industries. This combination of theoretical knowledge and applied practice ensures students gain a deeper understanding of design principles and construction techniques, preparing them for increasingly complex creative challenges. The third year is designed to advance students’ expertise and professional readiness. Students refine their costume-making and design skills through advanced projects, including design, patternmaking, and garment construction, alongside a study in textiles theory and practice. A creative arts practicum or project allows students to apply their knowledge in professional or simulated industry contexts. Additionally, students can choose two elective topics from creative arts, drama, and screen, allowing for further specialisation and personalisation of their studies. By the end of the program, graduates possess a strong portfolio, practical experience, and a comprehensive understanding of costume design and construction, equipping them to pursue careers in theatre, film, television, cosplay, and other performance-related industries.
