The Bachelor of Archaeology at Flinders University is structured to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, moving from broad introductory concepts in the first year to advanced field and research experiences by the third year. In the first year, students begin by exploring the foundations of archaeology and human history. Core topics include an introduction to archaeology, sex, death and ritual in the ancient world, stones, bones, plants and shells, and world archaeology over time. Students also study human evolution and cultural diversity through anthropology, with the chance to choose an option topic to tailor their learning. This year builds a strong foundation in understanding past societies, material culture, and human development. In the second year, the program becomes more specialized and introduces diverse areas of archaeological practice. Students examine First Australians and their cultural history, maritime archaeology, scientific techniques, geospatial archaeology, and Southeast Asia’s rich archaeological record. Other topics include Mesolithic to Medieval Europe and the evolution of our species, which provide comparative perspectives on human history and cultural change. Students also take an option topic, allowing them to further align their studies with personal interests. This stage of the degree emphasizes analytical skills and introduces fieldwork and scientific methods used in archaeology today.By the third year, students focus on advanced applications and professional-level skills. They engage with topics such as Australian historical artefacts, the history of archaeological thought, Australian anthropology, and environmental archaeology. They also develop practical expertise through field methods, learn the history of maritime and underwater archaeology, and explore modern technologies like 3D capture and reconstruction. An additional option topic enables further specialization. This final year ensures that students graduate with not only theoretical insights but also hands-on experience, preparing them for careers in archaeology, heritage management, museums, or further research.
