Course Curriculum

The Master of Data Science is a two-year program designed to equip students with advanced skills in data handling, analysis, and interpretation across a range of industries. In Year 1, Semester 1, students begin with key subjects such as The Data-Driven Professional, Foundations of Programming, Mathematics for Data Science, and Introduction to Cyber Security Fundamentals and Practices. These units lay the groundwork for understanding data science tools, programming languages, mathematical principles, and essential cybersecurity practices. Semester 2 builds on this foundation with Professional Research and Communication, Leadership in IT Project Management, Statistics and R, and a set of prescribed electives that allow students to explore areas of personal or professional interest.Year 2 shifts toward practical application and advanced data science concepts. In Semester 1, students undertake a 30-credit Co-Operative Placement in Information Technology, gaining real-world industry experience. Alongside this, they complete Masters Project 1 and study Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, focusing on the development and application of intelligent systems and algorithms. Semester 2 concludes the program with Masters Project 2 and three advanced analytical units: Computational Methods for Data Analysis, Experiment Design and Visualisation, and Regression and Multivariate Data Analysis. These subjects provide students with the expertise to design, execute, and present complex data projects using advanced statistical techniques.Throughout the course, students develop a strong mix of theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience. They learn to work with real-time and unstructured data, use cloud computing platforms, and apply statistical and machine learning models to extract meaningful insights. Graduates are well-prepared to pursue careers in data science roles within healthcare, finance, government, IT, and related sectors. The course also supports career flexibility and growth, with opportunities to engage in research, leadership, and industry-based projects that reflect current professional demands.
