The Bachelor of Nursing program at Federation University is structured over three years and is designed to equip students with comprehensive theoretical knowledge and practical experience. In the first year, students build a foundation with subjects such as Introduction to the Nursing Profession, Anatomy and Physiology, Evidence-Based Practice, and Person-Centered Nursing Practice. They also explore Pharmacology and Indigenous health, while developing essential skills in nursing assessment and management. The second year advances into more complex topics including Public Health and Health Promotion, Mental Health Nursing, Pathophysiology and Pharmacology, Primary and Community Care, and Care of the Older Person. Two clinical practice units further embed person-centered care in practical settings. In the final year, the focus shifts toward preparing students for professional practice and leadership roles. Units such as Transition to Practice and Leadership, Care of Children and Adolescents, and Management of the Deteriorating Patient offer deeper clinical insights and decision-making skills. Students also engage in nursing research and quality improvement, along with courses addressing chronic condition care. The capstone experience is a 30-credit point clinical placement where students consolidate all aspects of their learning in diverse healthcare environments. Across the three years, students complete 800 hours of supervised clinical placements, gaining exposure to acute, aged care, mental health, and community nursing settings. These placements are supported by partnerships with hospitals and health services across Victoria, and may include international opportunities. The course not only prepares students for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) but also for a wide variety of career paths in hospital, community, or specialist areas. This structure ensures graduates are confident, competent, and ready for a fulfilling nursing career in Australia or internationally.
