The Diploma of Science (Engineering Studies) (CRICOS Code 092036D) is a two-stage program designed to provide students with a solid academic foundation and practical skills for progression into engineering degrees at Edith Cowan University (ECU). Year 1 of the diploma consists of eight units delivered over two or three trimesters. It focuses on developing core academic, communication, computing, mathematical, and physics knowledge, alongside key employability skills. Students complete six core units—Workplace Communication – Employability, Introductory Computing, Introductory Mathematics, Communication Skills, Introductory Physics, and Introductory Applied Maths—plus two electives. This stage serves as a pathway into Year 2 of the Diploma. In Year 2, students undertake another eight units that align closely with the first-year curriculum of ECU’s Bachelor of Engineering programs. These units include Engineering Drawing and CAD, Materials and Manufacturing, Mathematics 1 and 2, Introduction to Engineering, Electrical Engineering Fundamentals, Introduction to Energy and Resource Engineering, and Engineering Mechanics. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning and exposure to industry-relevant tools and practices, preparing students for real-world applications in the field. Year 2 can also be completed over two or three trimesters, offering flexibility for diverse student needs. Upon successful completion of all Year 2 units with at least a 50% pass in each, students gain up to eight units (120 credit points) of advanced standing and can enter directly into the second year of a related engineering bachelor’s degree at ECU. The diploma provides a supported and structured pathway into university-level engineering, particularly beneficial for students needing to build confidence, academic skills, and familiarity with engineering concepts before progressing to higher-level studies.
