The Diploma of Science (Computing/IT) is a two-stage program at Edith Cowan College designed to prepare students for direct entry into the second year of related bachelor’s degrees at Edith Cowan University (ECU). The Year 1 diploma (CRICOS Code 092035E) consists of 8 units and can be completed over two or three trimesters. This stage focuses on foundational knowledge and skill development, offering students a structured learning environment with an emphasis on academic preparation and employability. The core units include Workplace Communication – Employability (COM220), Introductory Computing (CPT107), Introductory Mathematics (MTH104), Communication Skills (COM210), and Project Management (PMG100). Students also choose three electives from a list of recommended Year 1 subjects, allowing them to tailor their learning toward their interests in computing and information technology.Upon successful completion of the Year 1 diploma, students progress into the Year 2 diploma, which also comprises 8 units and can be completed in two or three trimesters. The Year 2 program introduces more advanced topics and specialisations in computing, including computer science, security, software engineering, and information systems. Units include Professional Science Essentials (SCI1125D), Mathematics for Computing (MAT1252D), Systems Analysis (CSI1241D), Programming Principles (CSP1150D), Applied Communications (CSG1105D), Computer Fundamentals (ENS1161N), Systems and Database Design (CSG1207D), and Computer Security (CSI1101D).Students who complete the Year 2 diploma with a minimum pass grade of 50% in all units are awarded 8 units (120 credit points) of advanced standing, equivalent to the first year of a computing-related bachelor’s degree at ECU. This pathway provides an excellent option for students who require additional academic support or who do not meet direct university entry requirements, offering a smooth transition into university-level computing studies.
