The Cyber Security course at ECU is structured to provide a comprehensive and practical education in the field, with flexible study options to suit a range of student needs. The course is available for full-time study at the Joondalup campus or online during both Semester 1 and Semester 2. Part-time study is also available online in both semesters, offering additional flexibility for working students or those with other commitments. The course spans three years of full-time study and is divided into six semesters, with a strong focus on both theoretical foundations and applied skills. In Year 1, students are introduced to the basics of programming, computing mathematics, systems analysis, and professional science. The second semester builds on this with foundational units in communications, computer security, computer fundamentals, and database design. In Year 2, the focus shifts to specialized areas such as cryptographic concepts, Internet of Things (IoT) and operational technology (OT) security, scripting languages, IT security management, network security fundamentals, malware analysis, and computer forensics. These units help students develop in-demand technical skills across a range of cyber security domains.Year 3 deepens students’ understanding of industry practices and advanced topics. Semester 1 includes units in ethical hacking, machine learning, enterprise security governance, and incident response. In the final semester, students have two options: complete an Applied Project with two electives, or apply for a Work Integrated Learning placement, which provides practical industry experience through a 60-credit Professional Placement unit.Overall, ECU’s Cyber Security course is designed to prepare students for real-world roles in both the private and public sectors. The mix of academic theory, technical practice, and workplace exposure ensures graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge needed for a successful career in cyber security.
