The Bachelor of Journalism and Broadcast Media is designed to equip students with practical skills and knowledge for a dynamic media environment, focusing on news, entertainment, sports reporting, and presenting across TV, radio, online, and social platforms. The course requires completing 360 credit points, split between 240 credit points of core units and 120 credit points of electives. Students can customize their learning by choosing majors, minors, or elective sequences, and may have certain elective sequences recorded as minors on their transcript. The curriculum begins with foundational courses like Radio and Podcast Production, Fundamentals of Journalism, Journalism for TV and Streaming, Media Law and Ethics, and News Features, introducing students to the basics of reporting, media ethics, and multimedia storytelling. In the second year, students deepen their skills with units on Storytelling and Social Media Influence, Radio Newsroom, Digital Content Creation, Sport and Entertainment Reporting, and Newsroom Editing and Publishing, offering both practical and theoretical insights into journalism and broadcast media production. The third year includes advanced units such as Radio Newsroom, Investigative and Data Journalism, and TV Newsroom, where students engage in hands-on newsroom experience and investigative reporting techniques. Elective options allow exploration of complementary fields, including photography, communication campaigns, media content strategy, and principles of inclusive communication. Additionally, general recommended electives cover diverse topics such as Indigenous sci-fi and futurisms, studio production, creative writing, event management, marketing, and ethics in business. Opportunities for professional development are available through internships and professional placements, providing real-world industry experience. This course structure supports the development of versatile journalism skills that go beyond traditional reporting, emphasizing social justice, climate change, diversity, and digital media trends.
