The Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering is a four-year program that requires students to complete 30 core units, 2 elective units, and an Engineering Practicum. The course structure provides a solid foundation in engineering fundamentals and progresses into more advanced and specialized topics relevant to mechatronics. In the first year, students study introductory engineering, materials and manufacturing, engineering drawing, computer-aided design (CAD), and mathematics. The second semester continues with engineering mechanics, electrical engineering fundamentals, resource engineering, and advanced mathematics. In the second year, the program introduces instrumentation, engineering systems, programming, dynamics, thermodynamics, and ethics, alongside CAD and manufacturing processes. These units build analytical and practical skills necessary for mechatronics applications. The third year delves into more complex topics such as fluid mechanics, mechanical design, advanced manufacturing systems, digital electronics, microprocessor systems, electrical machines, and signal processing. Students who achieve a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70 or above at the end of their third year are invited to undertake a graded honours thesis in place of the standard final-year project. In the final year, students complete a practicum and explore robotics, control systems, power electronics, engineering management, and industrial control. Depending on their honours pathway, they will either complete a two-part thesis or a capstone project. Elective units allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, with options such as analog electronics, embedded systems, communication networks, structural analysis, power systems, sustainability, and advanced thermofluids. The course emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical experience through project work, lab sessions, and industry placements. Graduates will emerge with the technical expertise and interdisciplinary skills required for careers in automation, robotics, manufacturing, and intelligent systems, equipped to lead projects and innovate in complex engineering environments.
