The Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing is structured to build students' storytelling skills while offering flexibility through electives and optional pathways. Over three years, students complete 240 credit points in core and core option units, along with 120 credit points in electives, which may be drawn from across the university. This structure allows students to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals while focusing on developing their creative voice. In the first year, students begin with foundational units in creative writing, writing craft, and literature. They are introduced to short stories and drama, while also choosing from a range of core option units such as journalism fundamentals or literature and theory. Year one sets the groundwork for understanding narrative, character, style, and dialogue across various forms. The second year builds on this foundation with units like screenwriting, editing, creative non-fiction, and poetry. Students continue developing their portfolio and engage with contemporary writing forms and critical analysis. Elective options during this stage can deepen their focus in areas such as social media storytelling, media content strategy, or Indigenous science fiction. These choices allow for broad engagement with creative and critical disciplines. In the final year, students refine their craft through advanced units like speculative fiction and creative writing in the market. A highlight of the course is the Creative Writing Project, a capstone unit in which students undertake an extended piece of original work. Paired with courses in contemporary literature and multiple electives, this final stage encourages students to synthesise their skills and apply them in professional contexts. This degree is ideal for aspiring writers, editors, and storytellers who want to explore diverse writing forms and prepare for careers in publishing, media, communication, or the arts. The flexible structure and diverse electives ensure a rich and individualised learning experience.
