Course Curriculum

The Diploma of Information Technology is structured to prepare students for advanced study in various technology disciplines while also equipping them with essential foundational skills. To complete the course, students must successfully pass eight academic units, comprising five to seven core units and one to three elective units, depending on their chosen study focus. Additionally, students are required to complete one zero-credit-point module, Academic Integrity and Respect at Deakin. Starting from Trimester 3, 2024, some international students will also need to complete a new compulsory non-credit Language Development Module.The core and elective units cover a wide range of introductory subjects across key areas in information technology, computer science, and cybersecurity. Core IT subjects include Introduction to Programming, Data and Information Management, Computer Systems, Data Science Concepts, and Introduction to Responsive Web Apps. Students can also explore more specialised areas through electives such as Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing and Virtualisation, Exploring IT, and Real World Practices for Cyber Security. For those interested in technical or mathematical aspects, there are units like Introduction to Functions, Relations and Graphs, Discrete Mathematics, Introduction to Mathematical Modelling, and Algorithms and Computing Systems. Management is also offered as a general elective to broaden students’ understanding of business in IT contexts.Each unit is designed to build foundational knowledge and technical skills relevant to further study in fields such as computer science, software engineering, cybersecurity, and data science. The course structure is flexible and accommodates diverse interests while aligning with Deakin University's bachelor's degree pathways. Overall, the Diploma offers students both depth and breadth in introductory IT education, ensuring they are well-prepared for second-year university study and eventual careers in the tech industry.
