Course Curriculum

The Diploma of Design requires students to complete eight units, each worth one credit point, along with one compulsory zero-credit module. Starting from Trimester 2, 2024, some international students must also complete an additional compulsory module. Unit selection should align with the major students intend to pursue at Deakin University. The course offers a wide variety of units spanning design, communication, journalism, and related fields. Core design-focused units include Design Thinking, Design Fundamentals, Type Foundations, Interaction Design, and UX Fundamentals, which build essential skills in creativity and user experience. Complementary units such as Digital Photography, Principles of Animation, Designing 3D Animated Environments, and Scriptwriting Fundamentals offer diverse opportunities to explore various creative disciplines. Additionally, units like Advertising Principles and Practices, Creative Brand Communication, Strategic Communication and Writing, and Making Social Media provide practical knowledge relevant to marketing and media industries. Some communication and journalism units, such as Introduction to Public Relations, Introduction to Journalism, News Reporting, and Writing with the Camera, help students develop skills in storytelling and media production. Other offerings, including Crime and Criminology units, provide broader academic options for students interested in interdisciplinary studies. The compulsory zero-credit modules focus on academic integrity and language development to support students’ success throughout their studies.
