Course Curriculum

The Bachelor of Data Science at Deakin University is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the growing field of data science. This degree requires the completion of 24 credit points, including essential zero-credit-point compulsory units such as Academic Integrity and Respect, Safety Induction, and Career Tools for Employability, which are typically completed in the early stages of the course. The core of the degree involves 17 credit points of foundational and advanced data science units that cover key concepts such as mathematics, statistics, programming, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and predictive analytics. To gain practical experience, students also complete 3 credit points of capstone units, where they work on real-world projects, often in collaboration with industry partners, applying their skills to solve authentic business challenges using real data. Additionally, students can tailor their degree by choosing either a minor worth 4 credit points or 4 credit points of open elective units, allowing them to broaden their expertise or specialize in an area of personal interest. The course has certain academic progression requirements, including a maximum of 10 credit points at level 1 and a minimum of 6 credit points at level 3, ensuring that students engage with advanced topics before graduation. Most units are valued at one credit point each, making it easier for students to plan their studies. Full-time students generally study four credit points per trimester and usually undertake two trimesters each year, allowing for a structured and steady pace throughout the degree.
