Curtin’s Bachelor of Science is structured to provide students with a strong, flexible foundation in science, followed by specialised study tailored to individual interests and career goals. First-year students are also guided to choose appropriate mathematics units based on their prior study, with advanced calculus or linear algebra recommended for those with specialist or methods mathematics backgrounds, and foundational units for others. Students in data science, software development, ICT, mining, or physics majors are required to complete COMP1005 Fundamentals of Programming to develop essential computational skills. In Year 2, students progress to a major, completing 200 credit points in areas such as Agricultural Science, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Marine Science, Data Science, Earth Sciences, Environmental Science, Food Science and Technology, ICT, Mathematics, Mineral Processing, Mining, Physics, Software Development, or Space and Planetary Science. Alongside their first major, students select a second major, minor, or specialisation, also to the value of 200 credit points. Curtin offers a wide range of minors and specialisations, including Climate Change Science, Environmental Management, Forensic Studies, Geoscience, Indigenous Australian Cultural Studies, Artificial Intelligence, Industrial Mathematics, Internet of Things, Planet Positive initiatives, and regional innovation, among many others.Year 3 and beyond allow students to further tailor their studies based on previous selections, deepening knowledge in their major while exploring interdisciplinary options through minors and specialisations. It also ensures students are prepared for diverse career paths across industry, government, research, and community organisations, ready to respond to evolving global scientific challenges.
