The course structure of the Bachelor of Science in Midwifery is designed to progressively develop professional knowledge, clinical competence, and evidence-based practice skills across three years of study. In Year 1, students are introduced to the foundations of midwifery and professional health practice. Learning begins with Continuity of Midwifery Care, which establishes a woman-centred approach early in the program. Core units in human structure and function, midwifery bioscience, and introductory clinical practice provide essential biological and clinical foundations. Students also develop professional skills through studies in evidence-informed health practice, professional midwifery studies, and Indigenous cultures and health behaviours, ensuring culturally safe and ethical care. In Year 2, the program focuses on developing applied and complex midwifery knowledge alongside increasing clinical responsibility. Units in applied midwifery bioscience and clinical practice strengthen students’ ability to manage normal and complex pregnancies. Perinatal mental health is a key component, highlighting the psychological and emotional aspects of maternity care. Additional studies in acute nursing bioscience, screening, and diagnostic practices further enhance clinical decision-making skills. Learning is supported by continued exposure to diverse healthcare and social contexts through health and wellbeing studies. In Year 3, students consolidate their learning and prepare for professional practice and leadership within midwifery. Advanced inquiry units emphasise evidence-based clinical practice and leadership skills relevant to nursing and midwifery settings. The program culminates in a Midwifery Capstone, which integrates theoretical knowledge, clinical experience, and reflective practice. Advanced clinical theory and practice, women’s reproductive health, and pharmacology and prescribing for midwives ensure graduates are competent in contemporary, autonomous midwifery practice. Overall, the structured progression from foundational knowledge to advanced clinical application equips graduates with the skills, confidence, and professional readiness required for safe, effective, and woman-centred midwifery care.
