This course is structured to provide a progressive and comprehensive pathway through the core areas of modern computing, networking and distributed systems, ensuring students build both strong theoretical foundations and practical expertise. In the first year, students develop essential skills in programming, software engineering and computer systems. Units such as Fundamentals of Programming, Unix and C Programming, and Data Structures and Algorithms introduce problem-solving, algorithmic thinking and low-level system interaction, while Computer Systems and Linear Algebra strengthen analytical and mathematical reasoning. The inclusion of data security and Indigenous science perspectives ensures students gain an ethical, secure and culturally informed understanding of computing practice. In the second year, the focus shifts to systems-level knowledge and networked environments. Students study operating systems, Unix systems programming, data communications and network management, gaining insight into how software interacts with hardware and networks at scale. Cloud Computing introduces modern distributed and virtualised infrastructures, while Database Systems develops skills in data modelling, management and retrieval. Flexible option streams allow students to broaden or tailor their studies through areas such as geospatial technology, sustainability-focused learning, or selectable electives aligned with individual career goals. The final year emphasises advanced networking, design and professional practice. Units in distributed networks and network systems design explore the architecture and management of complex, large-scale systems, while Human Computer Interface strengthens understanding of user-centred design. Engineering management and professional practice prepares students for leadership, teamwork and ethical decision-making in industry contexts. Students may also complete a capstone project or a substantial internship, providing the opportunity to apply their technical knowledge to real-world problems or professional environments. Overall, the course structure is designed to produce adaptable, industry-ready graduates with strong technical capability, systems thinking skills and practical experience across high-demand computing domains.
