In the first year of the animation program, students develop a well-rounded foundation through a combination of theoretical study, practical skills, creative development, and industry knowledge. The animation theory component includes courses like Film Animation: History & Theory and Visual Storytelling, which provide students with a deeper understanding of the evolution of animation and how stories are crafted visually to engage audiences. These courses give essential context and inspire creative approaches to storytelling. In the principles stream, students focus on mastering the technical and artistic aspects of animation through Principles of Animation and Production Design & Art Direction. These subjects teach the fundamental techniques of movement, timing, and visual composition, as well as how to create compelling designs that enhance narrative storytelling. The practical side of the curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning through Drawing for Animation and Motion Design. Drawing for Animation hones foundational artistic skills crucial for character and environment creation, while Motion Design introduces students to dynamic visual effects and animation software, bridging traditional and digital techniques. Supporting these core areas are the Creative Foundations and Industry Foundations courses, which cultivate students’ creative thinking and provide insights into the workings of the animation industry.
