Course Curriculum

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at Charles Darwin University (CDU) is a research-intensive program designed for students to undertake a novel and substantial program of research under the guidance of two or more experienced supervisors. PhD candidates are expected to develop original insights and contribute significantly to their discipline, advancing knowledge and addressing complex research questions. Candidates are required to produce a thesis, typically comprising 60,000 to 100,000 words, or, in some cases, a creative output such as a film, novel, or exhibition accompanied by an exegesis of 30,000 to 50,000 words, demonstrating scholarly analysis and reflection.The program incorporates a structured research training and professional development component, ensuring candidates gain expertise in research integrity, research methods, communication, personal development, and career progression. To support the research journey, candidates prepare a research proposal and deliver an oral presentation to confirm their candidature. Progress is monitored through a second presentation midway through their program and a third presentation towards the conclusion of their candidature, providing opportunities for feedback and development.PhD candidates are encouraged to engage with broader research communities, participate in interdisciplinary projects, collaborate with fellow researchers, and disseminate their findings through publications, conferences, or public engagement activities. The program also provides training aligned with the Higher Degree by Research (HDR) Policy, enhancing transferable skills such as project management, leadership, scholarly communication, and professional ethics.By the completion of the program, graduates are equipped to independently design, execute, and communicate complex research projects, producing outcomes of national or international significance. CDU’s PhD program prepares candidates not only for academic careers but also for leadership roles in industry, government, and professional sectors, fostering innovation, knowledge creation, and societal impact.
